Tha Native Americans called Spanish moss itla-okla which meant tree hair.
It’s not actually moss, but an air plant that doesn’t root or take nutrients from the tree.
It’s beautiful, especially with the sun behind it, and a home for chiggers, spiders, and other critters. :)

Spanish Moss
Hmmmm....lookin' a little more like Halloween than Christmas. :):)
I love the way spanish moss looks on our trees yet I feel bad for all of the sun it steals from them.
I read a story once of a lady that filled her shirt with the stuff to take it home with her, not knowing that it has a lot of critters living inside of it. (I told this story before when it was fresher in my mind and I remembered more of the details.)
